Craig Claiborne's Bread and Apple Stuffing

8 cups coarsely blended or crumbled fresh bread crumbs
2 cups raisins, dark or golden
4 cups apples, your choice, peeled, cored and cubed
1/3 cup finely chopped parsley
1/2 teaspoon finely minced garlic
1 teaspoon ground mace
1 teaspoon dried, rubbed sage
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/4 lb. unsalted butter, melted
Salt and pepper

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, combine the bread crumbs and rest of ingredients and blend well. Salt and pepper to taste. Butter the inside of a 13 x 9 x 2 baking dish. Pour the stuffing into the dish and smooth over the top. Place in the oven and bake 1 hour.
